A unique chance to help fine-tune a musical show about Southampton and the ill-fated RMS Titanic will be on offer on Saturday 10 April 2010.
Audience members who attend that night's preview performance of 'Look Out' – a new show being readied for the 2012 centenary of the sinking of the Titanic – will be invited to share their thoughts on the show with its writers, who will use them to shape its final form.
A limited number of tickets for the preview – which starts at 8pm in St Michaels Church, Bugle Street - are available from the Southampton Tourist Information Centre in Civic Centre Road.
Three Southampton songwriters (Jeff Henry, Brian Hooper and Barry Wake) have joined forces to write 'Look Out'.
Their show uses songs, narration and local newspaper stories of the time to explore the links between city and ship. Many of its tales are told through the eyes of Titanic crew members and in particular those of Fred Fleet, the lookout who first sighted the fateful iceberg.
"People are still fascinated by the story of the Titanic and we think that 'Look Out' will give them some different insights into what the ship and its sinking meant for Southampton," said Brian Hooper.
"The preview performance will tell us if our audience finds it as compelling as we do, and we'll use what they tell us that night to fine-tune the show so that the production is the best we can make it."
The preview, which is supported by Southampton City Council, is one of a number of Titanic-related events running between now and the 2012 centenary. Details of all the events are on the What's On pages of the City Council website.
The completed show will be performed as part of Southampton's centenary activities in 2012, and also released as a CD.
All three songwriters will perform in the show alongside four other talented local singers and musicians (Pete Harris, Ali Campion, Mary Lee and Vicky Couling). Pictured far left: Alison, Brian, Barry, Pete, Jeff and Mary. Left: Vicky.
