23 Askew Sisters

Last here in April 2009, these fine musicians were born and bred in London. Regularly visiting Sidmouth Folk Festival and folk dances since childhood, they now perform (mostly) traditional songs and tunes from all over the UK (and some beyond) building up great skill on various instruments (**"to the dismay of neighbours") and latterly adding beautiful songs and some very playable self-penned tunes to their repertoire. They also (somehow) find time to play for and dance with Morris, Rapper Sword and Appalachian Teams! These days (coming full circle) they are booked to perform at Sidmouth and many other Festivals and Clubs. Emily started off playing cello, recorder and piano, but realising there weren’t workshops at festivals for said instruments, she learnt fiddle (now also learning medieval fiddle and baroque oboe and has been performing with new trio “Lady Maisery” most recently at York Early Music Festival). Hazel started off on flute, harp and piano, but decided she wanted a gutsy Englishy-sounding instrument, so she taught herself the melodeon (see** above). Latterly taking up singing, she has a rich musical voice, with Emily delightfully harmonising here and there. Together with Craig; Morgan; Robson, they have been performing a show called "The Axford Women" (George Gardner collected many songs from 5 women in the tiny Hampshire village of Axford in 1907 and there is a CD Axford Five and 3 of their own CDs Six by Two, All in a Garden Green and Through Lonesome Woods all recorded by Wildgoose AND they were recently requested on the Mike Harding Show (by someone who saw them in a midlands club). Since late 2010, they have also become part of 5-piece group "The Artisans", who played an amazing array of medieval instruments at Wherwell Village Hall on 2 September to an audience who were a bit bowled-over by the sheer skill and beauty of the performance. Catch them if you can in any of the above combinations.
