Fo'c'sle Programme October 2006

6 Steve & Kristi Nebel

The songs of this "powerhouse duo" are based on people they have met and on the pioneer culture of the US Pacific North-West, past and present. Both from singing families (Kristi's parents were a barbershop duo) they perform with verve and humanity (either solo or duo) with Steve on guitar and Kristi on Ibanez bass. "[They] draw you into a tale and make you care about the people and places" (Dirty Linen) and their great rapport and infectious enthusiasm will be remembered from previous visits. Some of Steve's songs have a wry ‘don't mess with Mother Nature' bent and as well as performing in Folk Clubs, the Nebels have graced many historical theme events with their own specially written songs.

Seen here when they were passing through last year in Portsmouth (they won't be using mikes here).

13 Tom Lewis

Belfast-born Tom spent 25 years in the Royal Navy (mostly underwater) before dropping anchor in British Columbia. Since then, he's travelled (mostly by road) from Brisbane to Baltimore, from Liverpool to Lunenburg, singing traditional shanties and songs of the sea and seashore fashioned from his own nautical experiences and underscored by sparse, evocative instrumentation with accordion or ukulele. His dynamic engaging style carries listeners of all ages on a capitvating, often hilarious voyage, liberally sprinkled with salty stories! Many remember him as an original Portsmouth Shantymen and if you were lucky enough to see ‘The Widow's Uniform', he was invited to come over from Canada and and perform in it. It's been far too long since he was here - come and sing those choruses!

20 Anything Goes

Play or Sing, read a Poem, tell a Story, listen, fetch the beer, anything

27 Dana & Susan Robinson

“...sublime vocal harmonies, guitar, banjo, fiddle and mandolin, Dana and Susan bring a traditional flavor to their contemporary songs...”

We heard this wonderful American couple at Whitby in 2005 following many requests from enthusiasts to book them, and didn't need a second bidding ...

In a Dana and Susan Robinson concert you'll hear two rich, intimate voices, intricate and powerful guitar and banjo playing with a handful of fiddle and mandolin thrown in. Dana writes songs and tells stories about America, the land and its people. They bring to their performances an understanding of America's musical heritage and convey its significance to our culture (their own description, but it's all true).
