"Southampton in Song" Launch with
Brian Hooper & Jeff Henry

St Michael's Church, Bugle Street.
Details tel 02380 340749

An ongoing project with songs new and old, some written by Jeff and Brian and some by friends, some made-over from traditional sources, some you will know and some you won't, to celebrate Southampton in song with a Concert programme, an Entertainment and a CD.
The Southampton in Song concert will be a fund raising event in aid of SCRATCH - Southampton City and Region Action to Combat Hardship. Tuesday 4th October is the anniversary of the Sack of Southampton in 1338 and appropriately, it is happening at St Michael's Church in the old part of Southampton. St Michael's is the oldest church in Southampton, and is over 250 years older than the town walls you see today. It was also the focal point of the Sack of Southampton, and so was the obvious choice for our concert. We will feature most, if not all the songs from the CD, and we hope to raise a goodly amount for SCRATCH. We are pleased to tell you that the Mayor of Southampton has kindly agreed to attend, and we have also invited other local dignatories to join this celebration of our city. There will also be 'dramatic interludes' - come along and see for yourself! Tickets £5 are now available from either Brian or myself and see the website.

7 Jed Grimes

Jed Grimes A fine singer and sensitive lyrical guitarist (former member of ‘Hedgehog Pie' and ‘Jack the Lad'), Jed now tours with his Band ‘The Hush' (plus Bob Fox and Graham Wood) and as a Duo with Graham as well as solo. About 3 years ago, he and Tony Wilson (storyteller) ran a series of storytelling/musical/picture-making workshops for schoolchildren, going firstly to Scotland, then to Durham and more recently on a nation-wide tour of schools which he found immensely satisfying and great fun. He was also interviewed and had 5 tracks played on R2's Mike Harding Show (Oct ‘03). Jed's heart is deeply rooted in both traditional and contemporary music, but he is not afraid to be thoughtfully inventive in his arrangements either of the much-loved music of his native NE England or his own songs and tunes and his recent production of the debut CD of ‘The Hush' has been highly praised by many reviewers (inc Folk on Tap's Geoff Wall).

21 Chris & Siobhan Nelson

Now living in Southport, Chris (fiddle, mandola, voice) and Siobhan (fine voice) were (and still are) familiar faces in this area performing for 20 years with The Cluster of Nuts Band and The New St George (among others) as well as being long-time members of Loose Screws Appalachian Dancers and String Band along with Barry Wake, with whom they now work occasionally as the trio Nelsons Wake.  Last here at 2004 Solent Folk Festival, they perform mainly contemporary British and some American songs (sometimes a cappella), ranging from haunting ballads to old-timey by such diverse writers as Sandy Denny and Mark Knopfler.

Since they moved 'Up North' Siobhan, with her really beautiful voice, has revived her singing career. They couldn't make the Festival in 2005, so we have them here at the Fo'c'sle instead. They perform a mixture of material, traditional, self-penned and including several of Barry Wake's most popular compositions.

As they say on their own website: "Chris and Siobhan Nelson have been performing music together for more than 20 years, having first got together when they were members of The Cluster of Nuts Band in the 1980s. They are now carving out a reputation as a duo, and are equally at home in an intimate, acoustic setting or on the 'big stage'. They have a varied and growing repertoire of contemporary and traditional British and American songs, either accompanied by Chris on fiddle, viola or octave mandola or a capella. Their repertoire includes refreshingly original arrangements of songs by a wide range of great writers - from within and outside the folk scene."
