Whether it is the haunting lilt of an Irish melody or the fizzing energy of a reel or jig, Altan's performance has more than a touch of magic about it. It's a music steeped in a landscape of peat bogs and misty mountains, whitewashed bothies and friendly pubs where the craic goes on long into the night — a truly authentic Irish sound that has won legions of fans from Donegal to Tokyo to Seattle. Accolades such as BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards — Traditional Band of the Year, TG4's Traditional Band of the Year and Irish Music Magazine's Best Live Band prove what we all know already — Altan are the voice of Ireland.

10 Jim Causley

Jim gained his early experience of folk music from his mother and in his home village in East Devon with its strong traditions of cyder making and wassailing. He began finding his voice in a series of choirs from the village church choir to a city based gospel choir. He studied both Performing Arts and Jazz & Popular Music at Exeter College and whilst already a familiar face on the local folk scene he was best known as the front-man for several pub bands on the Exeter music scene.

During this time he also came into contact with the Wren Trust with whom he performed widely. Then in 2002 Jim popped up north to study Traditional Music at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. Since then he has obtained a growing and enthusiastic following as a fine singer of great skill and character and has performed at festivals such as the National, the English Country Music Festival and Whitby Folk Week including collaboration with Fay Hield of the Witches of Elswick and Karen Tweed & Roger Wilson. He toured with Alistair Anderson as part of the Stepping Out tour and has had repeated airplays on BBC Radio 3's Late Junction. He has also been involved in leading a number of singing workshops with Fay Hield as part of the Cumbrian Youth Arts project and in 2003 he supported Jim Moray as part of his groundbreaking Smoke and Mirrors tour.

He appeared as one of three guests at the Black Swan Folk Club's annual Young Performers Night in February 2004 and has performed at various festivals all over the country including Holmfirth, Wadebridge and Whitby. Jim has contributed two tracks to Martyn Wyndham-Read's new album project; Song Links 2 (Fellside) which was featured in a special premiere concert at last years 50th Sidmouth International Festival. He also performed solo there as well as leading a week of singing workshops with Lauren McCormick as part of the Shooting Roots team.

Jim performs solo and also in The Devil's Interval with Lauren McCormick and Emily Portman (see the T.D.I. page) He has rather catholic tastes in music and his influences range from the likes of May Bradley to Cyndi Lauper. His hobbies include history, photography, dancing to cheesy 80's pop music and sampling cyder... ...real cyder that is, none of that lucozade coloured squit.

24 Craig; Morgan; Robson

Songs from the British tradition and beyond woven into beguiling a-capella harmonies…
"An effortless range and variety unheard in folk music for many years" Folk London

Since joining forces in November 2003, Craig; Morgan; Robson have been astounding and delighting audiences with their enviable repertoire of songs and ballads from England, Scotland, Ireland and America, and with their outstanding a-capella singing. Moira Craig, Sarah Morgan and Carolyn Robson are accomplished and experienced soloists, and together they seamlessly blend their distinctively different voices and diverse backgrounds into one sound which is uniquely their own. In their performances you'll hear timeless songs of love and longing rubbing shoulders with compelling contemporary songs, and passionate, dramatic ballads taking their place alongside a lilting Shetland melody or a stirring hymn from the Ozark mountains.
