1 Anything Goes

Early May Bank Holiday Weekend
Play or Sing, read a Poem, tell a Story, listen, fetch the beer, anything

8 Donal O'Connor

Born in Boyle Co, Ireland, Donal (aged about 10) learned guitar by picking his sister's brains (she was learning at school) and continued on his own for 10 more years, but it wasn't until asked to sing at a party that he actually realised he could play, so he bought a guitar at age 21 with his first week's wages. Over time, he started taking the music more seriously listening to James Taylor, Gordon Lightfoot, Christy Moore, Mary Black, Maura O'Connell and Dolores Keane. Gaining some respect in the 1980s as a "pub gigger", he was also singing and playing in traditional get-togethers around Ireland. In 1992, a song he wrote for a fund-raising CD ‘Oh! No! Somalia' was used by Irish TV news as background music to their reports on the Famine which encouraged him to write more songs about people and places he loves and local and universal issues. His debut album was "CD of the Week" on Shannonside FM, he appeared ‘live' on 2 high-profile Radio Shows and the CD was the "most-played" on Celtic Coast Radio, Australia, but best of all was Christy Moore's letter to him describing the CD as "a pure joy". Since then, as well as regular ‘live' appearances on radio, he has been well received on tours around Irish, Scottish and English Folk Clubs. He has 2 more CDs ‘It's About Time' and ‘Live at The Moving Stairs' (and is working on another one).

29 Dan McKinnon

From the other Dartmouth in Nova Scotia, Dan tours all over the Canadian Atlantic coast, around Europe and the UK singing both traditional and his own songs in his beautiful, rich baritone voice. He has a talent for telling tales of the challenges and beauty of life, identifying with and captivating listeners with his comfortable easy style and he's a superb guitarist. Dan has appeared on TV, Radio, the Stage and in Films - quote from a reviewer "Before going further with this review, it's only fair to confess I could listen to him sing all day". Steeped in the music of the sea, he particularly loves Stan Rogers and is lead singer with the international Theatre Show about Stan's life and times. Once he's visited a Club or Festival, organisers tend to get nagged to rebook him and if he brings more than one of his several CDs, you'll have trouble choosing.
