Not one to blow his own trumpet, Bob has been absent from the Fo'c'sle for so long that not many will remember his last visit. A hidden treasure of the folk scene - make sure you hear him, it will be a night to remember in times to come.
Assuming you love our native folksongs, it is a mark of Bob's singing that he will hold your attention. Growing up in Heyshott, West Sussex where he went to the village school, his family and neighbours made their own entertainment and singing local songs was "as natural to me in our house as breathing" (his idea for a long time was that "folk songs was something you did at school")! His songs were learnt from his Mum and friends everywhere from Sussex to Cornwall and the songs on his CD The Painful Plough are everything from comical to sad, some well known and others will be new to listeners. Bob was last at the Fo'c'sle (Joiners Arms) in 1980 ‘supporting' his friend Shirley Collins - a disgracefully long time ago.

Born in Virginia, Judy grew up surrounded by family and friends who loved singing and in close proximity to good musicians (via Oberlin College music conservatory). Over time, she discovered the wealth of written, recorded and verbal sources for traditional songs and ballads (from both sides of the Pond) and later joined the Folklore Society of Greater Washington where she met lots of other folks who love the old songs. She has been "on the road" in the USA since the early 1990s when people she met at song-swaps began asking her to sing at coffeehouses, universities, history societies and festivals and Sara Grey introduced her to the UK folk community at Whitby Folk Festival in 1997. She has now amassed a vast and varied repertoire of traditional songs and ballads from both sides of the Atlantic spiced with her delightful sense of whimsy and sheer joy in singing and is looking forward to her first visit to this Club (she has 2 CDs - If You Sing Songs and Far From the Lowlands).

"I get asked to sing at the folk clubs in this area and some further afield, and festivals - yes, I’ve been asked to go to Whitby and to Sidmouth a number of times; Broadstairs, Falmouth, Dartmoor, yes, up and down the place. I’m going to Sidmouth and Whitby again this year. I’ve also been asked to go to traditional singing weekends like John Waltham’s one in Dorset and the one here at Seaford."

30 Judy Cook
Judy brings a powerful voice, a great-unaccompanied style and a deep respect for tradition to her performances of a huge repertoire of (mostly) American songs and ballads. Judy’s singing is marked by a command of narrative that pulls the audience in to really understand what the song is about. Her style and presentation are "a credit to the sources".
