8 Bram Taylor

Bram Bram Taylor is an entertaining artist with a distinctive voice and relaxed stage peesence who gives an evening 'Taylored' to suit his audience from a large repertoire of traditional songs, together with contemporary and humorous material, performed on acoustic guitar, duet concertina or unaccompanied. With a wealth of experience behind him, he has established a fine reputation which has gone from strength to strength from tours in the UK and USA of folk clubs, concerts and festivals. Bram has audiences singing, laughing from his infectious sense of humour, and occasionally shedding a tear or two from some of the poignant songs he loves to sing.

Bram is a well established Folk Club and Festival Performer, who has featured extensively on both local and national radio. His Popular festival session 'Ballads with Bram' has been well received as the perfect environment to be in the 'morning after the night before'.

15 Anything Goes

Play, Sing, read a Poem, tell a Story, listen, fetch the beer, anything

22 Sølan: Richard Chaff (guitar; vocals); Frances Wilkins (concertina)

Sølan play Shetland, Scottish, North American, Irish and original tunes and songs including some written by Richard.

Richard and Frances were both born and raised in England and their playing carries a cool English sensibility, yet they play their fiery tune-sets with a very Celtic passion and verve.

The influence of their years living in Shetland has left a strong influence on their repertoire, Richard having become a fine storyteller in the tradition and Frances's interpretations of Shetland tunes earning her plaudits from many native Shetland players!

Last heard at The Fo'c'sle in December 2003 when they filled in at short notice for a late and unfortunate cancellation, Sølan well deserve this proper booking after the fine show they put on that time. You may have come across Frances at the Lewes Arms where she gave an excellent concertina workshop.

From Nick Mitchell, Chester Folk Festival/Raven Folk Club, Chester 2003:-

“Sølan's music is a heady mix. Richard and Frances were both born and raised in England and their playing carries a cool English sensibility, yet they play their fiery tunesets with a very Celtic passion and verve. The influence of their years living in Shetland has left a strong influence on their repertoire, Richard having become a fine storyteller in the tradition and Frances’ interpretations of Shetland tunes earning her plaudits from many native Shetland players! Many who hear them for the first time will be astonished at their ability to switch from a stomping set of reels to a stunningly beautiful slow air or a finelycrafted song arrangement. The songs and tunes come from many sources Scots/Irish/Shetland/NE- English traditional dancetunes and airs, original instrumental pieces (some of Sølan's most moving tunes are composed by one R.Chaff!) and songs traditional, contemporary and original. One thing you will not be at a Sølan gig is bored!”

“The secret of the appeal of Sølan music, however, will remain the same whether you hear a bigband version or the two fine musicians at its core ... good music wellplayed with passion, commitment, style and above all soul! If you love traditionallyrooted acoustic music and you have not heard Sølan yet then they are most certainly a band you should hear. If you already know them, I am no doubt preaching to the converted!”
