    26 "Anything Goes"

    February

2 Bicentenary Burns Night hosted by Dave and Jean Mallan also known as Lallan. Music, songs, poetry and probably some traditional food. Kilts optional.

Burns is known to have drawn on traditional sources and on rummaging in a wonderful volume of "Scotch" songs assembled in the earlier part of the century, I found that "Auld Lang Syne" was around before Burns and the book quoted a collection of Scots Poems dated 1711 - it is therefore truly a folk song.

9 Tom McConville. An exciting fiddler and singer with Irish and Scottish parents, Tom draws from his ancestral traditions adding English and a hint of Bluegrass to more contemporary songs.
    16 "Anything Goes"
23 Joe Stead Here comes democracy! On this night you will be asked to choose the programme. Choices include "left wing love songs" and environmental issues, as well as traditional material played on banjo and mandolin. Come and make a difference.

    March

    1 "Anything Goes"

Friday and Saturday 8 & 9 March: special Women's Week events. On the Friday we have the popular group Sisters Unlimited perform for us, and on the Saturday Morning, 10am, at the University in the Lecture Theatre H and J complex (next to the Nuffield Theatre - see University map - it is the large square lump hanging off the right of Building 2a, ArtsII, on the NW detail map), they will be running a double workshop:

    The Singer and the Song
    - an exploration of traditional singing styles, the rôle of women as a repository for song and singing styles and of song in women's history.

    Two Flat Feet
    - the basics of Appalachian clogging and Flatfoot dance.

Sisters Unlimited are Sandra Kerr, Janet Russell (Breastfeeding Baby in the Park), Peta Webb and Rosie Davis (the dancer). Don't miss their childbirth shanty No Bed of Roses. The Nuffield car park (Saturday event only) is approached via Salisbury Road.

3 Roy Harris Roy is a surviving member of the first generation of revivalist singers, with a gentle character, fine voice and amazing a capella repertoire that mixes traditional, contemporary, Music Hall with a wide range of storytelling. Roy spent 12 years as a BBC Radio presenter.
10 Cyril Tawney Possibly the most celebrated of the original local folk heroes re-visits the club where he did his first gig for its 33rd Birthday Celebration. No promises about what he will sing tonight but you may remember Sally Free and Easy, and Grey Funnel Line.
17 "Anything Goes" but with the spotlight on Gosbee and Julia Lane (10pm onwards) whose music reflects the Scottish and Irish heritage of their native Maine. Fred wrote a tribute to the late Stan Hugill which got them invited to the Bristol Sea Music festival.
24 Cathy Winter on a return visit from the USA. Cathy cannot fail to impress you with her guitar skills; she sings mostly her own contemporary folk and blues with some traditional blues.
31 Artisan Contemporary folk music as tight as three part harmony can get. Brian bedford's arrangements are so packed with words there's no space for instruments!
