Bobby McMillon and Jerry Epstein

Bobby McMillon

Bobby McMillon was born in N. Carolina in 1951 and is heir to three different strands of Appalachian tradition. From his father's family in Tennessee he learned Primitive Baptist traditions and a lot of traditional songs, stories and old customs. From his mother's people in N. Carolina he heard many tales and the old ballads and went to school with relatives of Tom Dula (the "Tom Dooley" of the famous song) and learned their family stories.

By age 17, he began recording and interviewing relatives and neighbours who knew old songs and stories. Subsequently he has become widely known, first as singer and musician (playing banjo, guitar, dulcimer, harmonica and jews harp) and more recently as a story teller. He has performed at The Smithsonian Festival of American Folklife and numerous other Festivals, as well as a variety of schools, colleges, and in film, radio, and television programmes.

Jerry Epstein

Jerry is widely known for his powerful voice and his consummate mastery of the older traditional styles of singing. He is also among the best English concertina players around. He has a number of scholarly publications in music, including Music editor of the Frank & Anne Warner Collection (Syracuse Univ., 1984), from which he takes a lot of repertoire. He has published arrangements of traditional and early music for Revels, Inc. (Godine Press), and of two large volumes of Jewish sacred music. He is former president of the Folk Music Society of New York, Inc. In addition to his activities in traditional music, he has performed with a wide variety of classical and early-music ensembles. He has performed as concert accompanist for John Langstaff for over 25 years and as accompanist for David Jones. He records on the Minstrel label, and has recorded as back-up musician and singer on a number of other labels.

"Take a lot of talent, mix it with erudition, tradition, and a little sedition, and you have a smashing night with Jerry Epstein" (Pat & Pete Elliott, Birtley Folk Club)
