Fo'c'sle Programme February 2002

1 Anything Goes

8 Roger Watson

Roger at the Fo'c'sle
Friday 8 February 2002

Well-known for 'Roots Progress' and as the Artistic Director of TAPS, Roger is also a superb player of melodeon and English concertina and has an attractive singing voice. Roger creates individual versions of traditional songs as well as performing them 'straight', and with a few instrumentals as well as some ringing choruses, this promises to be a fulfilling (and fun) evening. Roger had to postpone his previous gig at the Fo'c'sle after a heart attack caused not least by overwork, so let's welcome him all the more on this occasion.

15 Anything Goes

22 All Aboard SS Shieldhall with
Hoover the Dog
8pm start, support from
Hen Party

On Board SS Shieldhall moored in Southampton Docks. Joint Concert with Woolston FC, advance tickets only.

THE BAND

John Hymas - violin, Tony Harris - bouzouki, guitar and vocals and Paul Hutchinson - accordion.

This immensely talented trio from the mid Wales borders burst onto the folk/world music scene in 1998 with the release of their debut album 'Scratch 'n' Sniff'.

Their live set is delivered with such enthusiasm and technical virtuosity it has enthralled Britain's festival and club audiences. Since the CD the band's repertoire has evolved and is now chiefly made up of original tunes by violinist John Hymas. These reflect his diverse musical background, encompassing Jazz, Classical, Folk and East European styles but with an overall Celtic flavour. The Hoover's set also includes dynamic and adventurous arrangements of traditional music interspersed with well chosen songs.

For a three-piece band Hoover The Dog create an astonishingly big sound and their imagination and musical skill constantly push at the boundaries of traditional and contemporary music.

Support from Hen Party - an à capella trio with an impressive pedigree. When Sarah Morgan and Alison Muir, former members of the brilliant harmony group Bread and Roses, teamed up with the superb voice of Heather Bradford, you would expect the result to be something special, and you will not be disappointed! The trio sing a variety of material - English and American, with Heather's Irish background shining through the vocal mix. Not all the songs are traditional; they draw on contemporary music, stray into the occasional country song, and even add a touch of Cole Porter, but everything they sing is hallmarked by their delight in good harmonies, and by the wit and humour of their presentation.

Woolston Folk Club joint promotion. The Shieldhall remains tied up at Berth 48, approached through Dock Gate 4. This gate (at the eastern end of Queen's Park) has a security man on duty - just tell him where you want to go. First right down Cunard Rd; Parking near the silos about 50 yards short of the boat! Concert 8-11.30pm. Tickets £5.50 advance only from either Club.
