David Jones

Songs of the British Isles & North America

David has been invited to perform at this year's National Folk Festival at Sutton Bonington (like all the main guests from 2001's cancelled festival) and the Fo'c'sle has taken the opportunity to have him guest for us the following week.

David has an enormous repertoire of folksong from both sides of the Atlantic. He has performed throughout his native Britain and North America at festivals, clubs, and colleges, singing songs from the great days of sail, Music Hall favorites, traditional ballads, and the works of contemporary writers. He sings both à capella and with guitar accompaniment and involves his audience in refrains and choruses ranging from boisterous to sentimental.

David also performs with the celebrated instrumentalists Bill Shute and Tom Goslin, and has sung with several groups including Bermuda Quadrangle and with Tom Gibney and Heather Wood in Poor Old Horse. He has played feature roles in both Equity and non-Equity theatrical productions, and his training as a structural engineer has led to many ports of call in the United States as well as a four-year sojourn in East Africa.

Reviews

"...one of the finest singers on the American folk scene on sea songs, ballads, drinking songs, music hall and a remarkably wide range of material from the sublime to the ridiculous."
—New York Folk Music Society Magazine

"...his offerings ran the emotional gamut from the hilarious 'Farmer and the Devil' tale to the frightening 'Werefox.'
Jones has a great presence, and the capacity to spark the inner eye of the audience. This was a delightful counterpoint to the classical music."
—The Recorder, Greenfield, MA

"...beautifully ornamented, subtly disciplined, sprightly and yet powerful singing."
—Come For to Sing

"Then David Jones brought the house roaring and weeping down with a newer English recitation, about Cousin Bill who ruined his mother's funeral for everyone by wearing brown boots. Of course, Bill cried a lot, stayed on at the graveyard, and, it turns out, had given his black boots away to a fellow who had no boots at all—but "brown boots!" — I ask ya!"
—Hartford Advocate

"...one of England's foremost traditional singers."
—Sacramento Bee

"...a polished craftsman with a warm glowing quality."
—The New York Tlmes

"...His ballads, songs of wit and humor, sea chanties and recent material on contemporary life combine to make his concerts a blend of pindrop quietude and rousing choruses."
—Calliope House Newsletter, Pittsburgh, PA

"I can understand why you have such a loyal following. Not only are your songs entertaining and sung with a rich voice, but you create a very relaxed, intimate atmosphere which puts people at ease and encourages them to participate. You possess personal skills as well as musical talents."
—Suzanne C. Stirn, Assistant Director,
The Abigail Adams Smith Museum, NYC

"...the best ballad singer in these parts."
—Boston Folk Music Society Newsletter

"For those who knew your music already, it was a warm reunion. For those hearing you for the first time (as I was), it was a magical encounter."
—Mark W. Segar, Director,
The Common School, Amherst, MA

"...fine English singer."
—Dirty Linen

"...lively songs and outrageous humor left a joyous audience shouting for more...a singer of depth and sensitivity."
—Sing Out

"...a captivating singer."
—Daily Hampshire Gazette

"...an uncommon ability for presenting a tragic ballad and a broad comic parody with equal conviction and authority."
—Audio Magazine

Stravinsky's "Histoire du Soldat" Review

"Jones' soldier was riveting. He took the character, and filled the room with it. one could feel the frustration of the bone-tired, somewhat dim soldier bamboozled by the devil."
—The Recorder, Greenfield, MA

Music Hall Review

"...the most versatile and commanding performance of the night was given by David Jones, who appeared in 4 different roles, beginning with Albert Chevalier singing 'My Old Dutch.' It's a sentimental song which is very difficult to do straight, but when he sang it, there probably wasn't a dry eye in the hall."
—Kite - Entertainment Guide, Albany, N.Y.
