Fo'c'sle Programme April 2002

5 Easter Week Anything Goes

12 Bill Whaley & Dave Fletcher

Bill Whaley & Dave Fletcher are "Lincolnshire's Best Kept Secret", but not for much longer. Portsmouth and Sturminster Newton sneakily got in before us but they're now coming to Southampton and you'll wonder where they've been all your life.

Well-known throughout their own county of Lincolnshire, both for their Club work as a duo and as members of the Higgledy Piggledy Band, Bill & Dave present a fine blend of voices mellowed by years of singing together. Their selection of songs encompasses both ancient and modern accompanied in traditional style on English and duet concertina, harmonica and melodeon, with enough choruses to satisfy any audience.

The pleasure they get from singing is obvious and since the release of their debut album " ... Their Fine Array" they have taken their music further afield in Clubs from Kent to Lancashire and Festivals including Cleethorpes, Holmfirth and Four Fools, Chorley. Their eagerly awaited second album "Old Men & Love Songs" (BILDA 002) has recently been released and has received enthusiastic reviews.

Billed as "One of Lincolnshire's Best Kept Secrets", the secret is beginning to leak out!

19 David Jones

Songs of the British Isles & North America

David has been invited to perform at this year's National Folk Festival at Sutton Bonington (like all the main guests from 2001's cancelled festival) and the Fo'c'sle has taken the opportunity to have him guest for us the following week.

David has an enormous repertoire of folksong from both sides of the Atlantic. He has performed throughout his native Britain and North America at festivals, clubs, and colleges, singing songs from the great days of sail, Music Hall favorites, traditional ballads, and the works of contemporary writers. He sings both à capella and with guitar accompaniment and involves his audience in refrains and choruses ranging from boisterous to sentimental.

David also performs with the celebrated instrumentalists Bill Shute and Tom Goslin, and has sung with several groups including Bermuda Quadrangle and with Tom Gibney and Heather Wood in Poor Old Horse. He has played feature roles in both Equity and non-Equity theatrical productions, and his training as a structural engineer has led to many ports of call in the United States as well as a four-year sojourn in East Africa.

Blazin' Fiddles

Aidan O'Rourke, Allan Henderson, Bruce MacGregor, Catriona MacDonald, Iain MacFarlane, Marc Clement (guitar) and Andy Thorburn (piano)
(Seen above rehearsing with a new member-to-be)!

Comprised of seven talented traditional Scottish musicians, Blazin Fiddles spotlights and combines traditional styles of Scottish fiddle music.

Born out of a common desire from the musicians involved to promote the true fiddle music of Scotland. The Scottish fiddle style has many different regional voices, and the aim of Blazin Fiddles is to highlight these to a world wide audience. Within three years of coming together as a group of soloists, they have now become one of the most sought after bands in traditional music. Within the past couple of years they have had enormous successes at Fiddles of the World, Celtic Connections, and the Cambridge Folk Festival.

Whether you want heart-melting airs, fiery strathspeys or raging reels, a Blazin Fiddles gig takes you through every human emotion possible.
