Fo'c'sle Programme April 2003

4 Doug B. Smith

Doug is a major new guitar talent and fine singer with a wide range of styles and material ranging from slow airs to virtuoso fast tunes from English and Scottish sources, as well as writing his own songs and instrumentals. Last year he toured with Wizz Jones and has consistently excited great interest in the Clubs and Festivals with his solo performance.

Described as "a phenomenally expressive and passionate player" and "quite simply one of the most gifted, sensitive and technically elite slide and fingerstyle guitarists around", his growing reputation as an exciting new talent has led to him supporting such artists as Kate Rusby, Hazel O' Connor and ex-Incredible String Band's Robin Williamson. His dynamic and varied approach to acoustic music has found an audience both at home in the folk club and on the more contemporary London music scene, where he has played at The Borderline, The Spitz and the 12-Bar Club. In 1998, Doug released his debut CD, Diving for Pearls, tracks from which have recently been featured on BBC Radio Scotland and Frank Hennessey's Celtic Heartbeat show on BBC Radio Wales. In May 2000, Doug performed at the launch of the BBC's Music Live week. He also teaches and performs at acoustic guitar workshops around the country.

Doug draws from a wide repertoire of material and sources; English, Scottish and Irish songs sitting beside traditional and contemporary American music, as well as composing his own songs and instrumentals. As he says, "Whether it's British and Irish traditional songs or American slide blues, I'm most interested in that place where the Tradition meets the Delta."

11 Dave Sealey

Previously half of ‘Cosmotheka' before the untimely death of his brother Al, Dave has bravely and triumphantly restarted his previous solo career, performing a varied repertoire still with a great many Music Hall numbers - a tremendously enjoyable and very funny act - see him and believe it.
