“Thanks, Lefty, what a fantastic night!” said a member of the White Horse Folk Club, Highworth. It was the end of a very special evening and Lefty, our MC, beamed round at us, “You know, nearly 60 people came tonight!”
They had all come to remember Bill Bailey who had been our MC for 16 years until his untimely death in October 2003. Not only had we reminisced but during the session we had concentrated solely on the music as Bill would have wished, each of us performing one of the songs that Bill had liked to hear. The evening was seamlessly woven together by Lefty, who joked about how Bill had asked him to fill in for two nights during the summer and how he had now taken on the post permanently.
Supporters came from the Swindon, Oxford, Chipping Norton and Shortwood clubs and some of Bill’s relatives travelled long distances to be with us. Distinguished musicians, old friends of Bill’s, also travelled from afar to join us.
We all agreed it was an inspiring evening and we may be repeating the event in years to come. Thanks everyone who came for a fantastic night!
