Friendly club - all welcome

Forest Folk began in February 2001 and has gone from strength to strength due to the tremendous support we have had from everyone who comes along to our monthly singarounds and guest nights. Singarounds are held on the first Mondays of the month and are free with a jug collection; guest nights take place on third Mondays, details as below. All evenings start at 8 pm and finish at 11 pm. We do, however, take a break and close during August when we all go on holiday!

We are delighted to be able to tell you that Martin Carthy MBE has agreed to become our patron.  Despite his well earned fame, he continues to champion folk clubs and this link to him emphasises our commitment to promoting live folk song and music and to try and bring the best acts we can to as wide an audience as possible.

Kerfuffle on Monday 21 July – tickets £10 non members, £8 members (www.kerfuffleonline.co.uk)

Kerfuffle are definitely one of the premier young folk bands around today! Featuring Sam Sweeney (fiddle, percussion), Hannah James (accordion, vocals, dancing), Jamie Roberts (guitars) and Tom Sweeney (bass), Kerfuffle’s gutsy, intelligent and ultimately musical performances have won them appearances at numerous festivals, a live session on BBC Radio 3, and a loyal following of fans across the country.

Virtuosic, vibrant, entertaining, witty, and modest—great young musicians with a wonderfully fresh take on the tradition. At Shrewsbury festival, Kerfuffle quickly had an excitable capacity crowd transfixed by their superbly unpredictable mix of heady dance tunes, tender ballads and bold vocal harmonies.” (Paul Sartin, Bellowhead)

CLOSED DURING AUGUST

Eleanor McEvoy on Monday 15 September – tickets £12 non members, £10 members (www.eleanormcevoy.com)

Normally filed under ‘folk’ and normally found treading the folk circuit, Eleanor has never felt bound by her roots and has successfully included many others in her repertoire - blues, soul, rock. A musician and songwriter of note, possessing all of the qualities that go to make up the complete artist.

Her career began at the age of four when she took piano lessons, taking up violin at the age of eight. Eleanor was accepted into the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland where she worked for four years before finally taking the plunge to concentrate on her passion for songwriting.  After a long hard slog, the girl who spent the year of 1988 busking in Union Square, New York had come a long way, a route that took her through the disciplines of classical music, Irish traditional music and contemporary music to a point where she finally found success in 1992.  It happened when one of her songs "Only a Woman's Heart" inspired the title for, and appeared on, the "A Woman's Heart" anthology album. It has since gone on to become the best selling album in Irish history, staying in the Irish Top 10 for over a year.  Since then Eleanor has gone on to become an artist and performer known throughout the world.
